React Introduction & JSX Components

Step 1: What is React?

The Declarative, Component-Based UI Library

React is a free and open-source JavaScript library, created at Facebook (now Meta), for building user interfaces from components. React allows developers to create large web applications that can change data, without reloading the page.

Analogy: Imagine building a toy castle using Lego blocks: each tower, drawbridge, and window is an independent, reusable Lego brick. You can combine, customize, and reuse them without rebuilding the entire castle from scratch!
Step 2: Interactive Syntax Anatomy

Anatomy of a Functional Component

export function Counter() { const [count, setCount] = useState(0); return <button onClick={() => setCount(count + 1)}> Count: {count} </button>; }
  • JSX stands for JavaScript XML. It allows you to write HTML elements inside JavaScript code.
  • Components must start with an uppercase letter (e.g. Counter, Navbar) so React can differentiate them from native HTML elements.
  • Calling a state setter schedules a re-render of the component with the new value.

React Core Retention Principles

  • Rule 1: React components must be pure functions regarding their props: never mutate input props.
  • Rule 2: Never modify state directly (e.g. count = 5 is forbidden) — always call the setter function (setCount(5)).
  • Rule 3: Hooks (useState, useEffect) must only be called at the top level of your component, never inside if-conditions or loops.
  • Rule 4: Always provide a unique "key" prop when rendering arrays of items.
⚠️ Common Pitfall / Gotcha: Omitting the dependency array makes useEffect run after every render; if that effect also sets state, it causes an infinite re-render loop.
