Node.js Introduction & Event Loop

Step 1: What is Node.js?

High-Performance Server-Side JavaScript

Node.js is an open-source, cross-platform JavaScript runtime environment that executes JavaScript code outside of a web browser. Built on Chrome’s V8 JavaScript engine, Node.js uses an event-driven, non-blocking I/O model that makes it lightweight and efficient for data-intensive real-time applications.

Analogy: Imagine a busy restaurant kitchen: a blocking server assigns one chef per table who stands idle waiting for water to boil. Node.js is an agile master chef who puts the water on the stove, sets a timer, and immediately cooks for five other tables while waiting!
Step 2: Interactive Syntax Anatomy

Anatomy of a Node.js HTTP Server

const http = require("http");const server = http.createServer((req, res) => { res.writeHead(200, { "Content-Type": "application/json" }); res.end(JSON.stringify({ status: "ok" }));server.listen(4000);
  • Node.js runs your JavaScript on a single main thread; libuv hands I/O to the operating system (and a small thread pool) and queues callbacks on the event loop.
  • require() is CommonJS syntax; modern Node also supports ECMAScript import statements.
  • res.end() must be called to finish the response; otherwise the client waits until it times out.

Which high-performance C++ engine powers JavaScript execution in Node.js?

Step 5: Remember This! (Memory Anchors)

Node.js Key Principles to Remember

  • Rule 1: Never block the event loop with heavy CPU-bound synchronous calculations.
  • Rule 2: Always handle asynchronous errors using try/catch with async/await, or unhandled promise rejections will crash the process.
  • Rule 3: Use environment variables (process.env) for secrets and port configurations.
⚠️ Common Pitfall / Gotcha: Never use synchronous file operations like fs.readFileSync in high-traffic request handlers — it halts all other user requests!
